Quiet Nights, Restored Lives: How Solea® Sleep is Ending the Snoring Struggle in Newton, MA

At Dr. Ted Filandrianos & Associates, we often see patients who come into our Newton office looking a little... tired. They aren’t just here for a cleaning; they are struggling with a "really annoying problem" that follows them home every night. It’s a problem that doesn’t just affect the person in the chair—it affects their spouse, their children, and the overall harmony of their household.
We’re talking about snoring.
For many, snoring is dismissed as a punchline or a minor nuisance. But as Dr. Lauren Gadeburg often points out, sleep is the foundation of our health, our mood, and our relationships. When snoring disrupts that foundation, the consequences are felt all day long. That is why we are so incredibly proud to offer a "simple solution" that is truly life-changing: Solea® Sleep.
The "Annoying" Problem That Affects the Whole Family
When we talk to our patients about snoring, the conversation almost always turns to their partners. Snoring has a way of creating "sleep divorces"—couples who love each other dearly but are forced into separate bedrooms just to get a few hours of rest.
The physical toll on the snorer is significant: morning headaches, daytime fatigue, and a lack of concentration. But the emotional toll on the non-snoring spouse can be just as heavy. There is a sense of frustration and even resentment when you’re kept awake night after night.
Solea Sleep isn’t just a dental procedure; it’s a way to bring families and spouses closer together. By creating "quiet sleepers," we’re helping people move back into the same room and wake up feeling refreshed together for the first time in years.
How Solea Sleep Works: The Science of Collagen
To understand how Solea Sleep works, you have to understand why most people snore in the first place. About 80% of snoring is "palatal snoring," which is caused by the vibration of the soft palate—the flexible tissue at the very back of the roof of your mouth.[5][6][7][8]
As we age, or simply due to our anatomy, the collagen fibers in our soft palate can relax and lose their tension. When you sleep, these relaxed tissues "flutter" and vibrate against each other as you breathe, creating the sound of snoring.[1][2][3][6]
The Laser Advantage
Solea Sleep is a non-invasive attachment to our existing Solea laser system. It uses a specific wavelength of laser energy to gently warm the collagen in the soft palate and surrounding tissues.
This warmth causes the collagen fibers to contract and shrink. By tightening these tissues, we effectively elevate the soft palate. This opens up the airway, allows for more airflow to get back there, and—most importantly—stops the vibrations that cause the noise.[3][4][6][11] It’s like tightening a loose drum skin so it no longer rumbles.[9]
The Procedure: No Needles, No Downtime, Just Relief
One of the biggest reasons our Newton patients love Solea Sleep is the "no-stress" nature of the appointment. We know that anything involving the back of the throat can feel intimidating, but we’ve made this process incredibly gentle.
1. No Needles Required
Unlike many medical snoring treatments, there are absolutely no needles involved in Solea Sleep.[1][2][3][4][5] We use purely a topical anesthetic spray to ensure the area is comfortable. You’ll feel a minor numbing sensation in the back of the throat, but it’s very light and usually disappears within an hour of leaving our office.
2. Five Minutes to Better Sleep
The actual laser treatment is remarkably fast—often taking only about five minutes of "laser time."[5][6][8][12] Because there’s no surgery or cutting, there is zero downtime.[1][3] You can have this done on your lunch break and head right back to work or out to run errands in Newton Centre.
3. The "Deep Breath" Test
One of the most rewarding parts of the procedure happens before the patient even stands up. After we finish the treatment, Dr. Gadeburg often asks the patient to take a deep breath in.
Almost immediately, patients report feeling relief.[1][2][4] They can feel that the airway is more open; they can feel that they can breathe more easily.[3] That "immediate effect" is a powerful moment for someone who has struggled with restricted breathing for years.
Is Solea Sleep Right for You?
While Solea Sleep is a miracle for many, it’s important to understand what it can—and cannot—treat. At Dr. Ted Filandrianos & Associates, we pride ourselves on being honest and informative with our patients.
Palatal Snoring vs. Nasal Snoring
Solea Sleep is designed specifically for palatal snorers. If your snoring is caused by a nasal issue—like a deviated septum, nasal polyps, or chronic congestion—Solea Sleep will not be the primary solution for you. During your consultation, we will evaluate your anatomy to ensure you’re a candidate who will actually see results.
The Sleep Apnea Adjunct
It is also important to note that Solea Sleep is not a cure for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).[4][7] Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition that requires a proper diagnosis. However, Solea Sleep is a "great adjunct" for our sleep apnea patients.[11]
Many people who use a CPAP machine or an oral appliance find that their snoring still persists, or they struggle with compliance because their airway is so restricted. By tightening the soft palate with Solea Sleep, we can often make those other devices more effective and comfortable, helping you stay compliant with your OSA treatment.[11]
The Roadmap to Quiet Nights
For the best, most long-lasting results, we typically follow a two-session protocol:
- Initial Session: Your first treatment to jumpstart the collagen tightening.
- Follow-Up: A second session spaced about three to four weeks later to "seal in" the results and ensure maximum airway opening.
After those two initial sessions, the effects typically last between 12 to 18 months. Just like the skin on our face, the tissues in the throat will eventually begin to relax again over time. Most of our Newton patients return once a year for a quick maintenance touch-up to keep their snoring at bay and their airway open.
