Do I have TMJ disorder?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a small but powerful hinge connecting your jaw to your skull—and when something’s off, the pain can affect your entire day. TMJ disorders (TMD) can be triggered by many causes, including clenching, grinding (bruxism), bite misalignment, joint trauma, arthritis, or even chronic stress. If you’ve been living with discomfort or struggling to find answers, our Newton office offers diagnosis and therapy to get you back to feeling your best.

TMJ/TMD treatments we offer

Neuromuscular therapy

Using digital jaw tracking, ULF-TENS therapy, and bite analysis, we create a detailed map of your jaw’s ideal position and guide your bite back into alignment.

Custom orthotics

Patients are fitted with removable orthotic devices that gently reposition the jaw over time to alleviate strain on the TMJ.

Ongoing bite therapy

Depending on the root cause, we may continue with orthopedic braces, aligners, or occlusal adjustments to maintain long-term joint health.

No. The Ultra Low Frequency TENS therapy we use is designed to be relaxing. It gently stimulates your muscles to release tension, similar to a light massage. The custom orthotics are precisely fitted to your bite so they’re comfortable for daily wear. Most patients begin to notice a decrease in pain, headaches, or jaw tension within the first few weeks of treatment.

Treatment time depends on your diagnosis and how your jaw responds. Phase one—relieving symptoms and stabilizing your bite—typically lasts 8–16 weeks. Phase two, which focuses on maintaining a healthy bite position with a removable orthotic or follow-up orthodontics, can last several months to a year.

Our approach is conservative and non-invasive, using neuromuscular therapy and custom orthotics to correct jaw function. Surgery is only considered if there’s severe joint damage that cannot be resolved with these methods, which is rare for our patients.

Possibly. If your jaw misalignment is due to crooked teeth or bite discrepancies, orthodontic treatment may be the final step to keep your bite in the correct position long term. In these cases, Dr. Mehregan can coordinate orthodontic care right here in our office so you don’t need to be referred out.
